How do Heat Pumps Work?

Heat Pumps provide cool air in the summer and also provide heat in the winter

How do they do both?

Heat Pumps in the Summer

A heat pump works just like and air conditioner.  They use a refrigerant to absorb unwanted heat in your home and transfer it to outside.  This occurs by changing the pressure in the refrigerant fluid.  By controlling the pressure of the refrigerant , the unit can extract heat from your home, even on very hot days.

Heat Pumps in the winter

A heat pump uses the same cycle in "reverse",   in the winter to extract heat energy from outside and transfer it into your home.  Even in very cold temperatures there is still some amount of heat energy in the air.  The outdoor air has higher energy than the cold low pressure refrigerant and the refrigerant absorbs that heat and evaporates.  The gas refrigerant is pressurized and raises the temperature.   When the refrigerant is piped back into a home it is used to warm up the air inside until heat is extracted and it condenses back into a liquid.
